What is cPanel reseller hosting, and how does it work?

cPanel 2 min read

cPanel reseller hosting is a service that allows you to offer hosting to your own customers without having to run your own server. In effect, you can become a small hosting provider: you sell and manage the accounts, whilst the provider takes care of server operations.

How does it work?

The reseller plan includes a specified amount of storage, traffic and the number of cPanel accounts that can be created. You can allocate these amongst your customers via the WHM (WebHost Manager) interface:

  1. In WHM, you create packages, such as ‘Small’ with 2 GB and ‘Large’ with 10 GB, with limits on storage, the number of email accounts or the number of databases.
  2. A separate cPanel account is created for each customer as part of one of the cPanel plans.
  3. Customers manage their domains, email accounts, databases and files via their own cPanel interface and cannot view other accounts.

The differences between WHM and cPanel are discussed in detail in the article comparing cPanel and WHM.

Overselling

Overselling means that the total storage space allocated to customers may exceed the storage included in the reseller plan. This works because customers rarely use up their entire allocation: a subscriber to a 5 GB plan often uses only a few hundred megabytes. However, the total amount of hosting actually used must not exceed the limit of the reseller plan, so usage must be monitored regularly and customers must upgrade to a larger plan in good time.

White label

White labelling means that you can present your services to customers under your own brand name: you can use your own logo and branding on the cPanel interface, so that customers see your service.

What are a reseller’s responsibilities?

  • creating, suspending and deleting customer accounts,
  • defining plans and prices, and invoicing customers,
  • First-level support team: customers contact you, and you contact us with any server-related queries.

Server updates, security, backups and the network remain the responsibility of the service provider.

It is primarily intended for web developers, agencies and system administrators who wish to host the websites they have created and provide their clients with separate, dedicated accounts. If you are only managing a few of your own websites, a standard cPanel hosting plan is simpler and cheaper.

aWh’s reseller cPanel hosting plans include 10–50 cPanel sub-accounts and 10–80 GB of NVMe storage, with overselling capabilities, CloudLinux isolation, ImunifyAV+ malware monitoring and white-label customisation. You can also read a guide on our blog on how to start your own hosting business.

How does it differ from a dedicated cPanel server?

Reseller hosting runs on a shared server, subject to the plan’s limitations. A dedicated cPanel server is a KVM VPS with its own resources and a cPanel licence, which we operate: you do not have to share the processor or memory with other users, and it is more customisable. This may be appropriate for resellers with higher traffic volumes or in cases where specific software requirements apply.
