Would you prefer to run Windows 10 or 11? If you have your own Windows 10 or 11 licence, a KVM VPS is the right choice for you: Windows VPS plans come with a Windows Server licence, whereas on a KVM VPS you can install the system using your own licence.

Windows VPS services

Windows licence

The monthly fee includes a fully licensed copy of Windows Server Standard, so you don’t need to purchase a separate licence and there is no legal risk.

Remote desktop access

You can securely connect to the server from anywhere using a remote desktop, enabling efficient remote working and straightforward server management.

Windows applications

Run important Windows applications, such as .NET and ASP.NET applications or business software, with seamless performance and easy installation.

A scalable solution

The plans are designed to meet a range of business needs, and if you need more resources, you can upgrade to a larger plan at any time.

Up to 3 Gbps, with unlimited data

Depending on the plan, you’ll get a connection speed of 1–3 Gbps, with unlimited incoming and outgoing traffic, so you can keep your applications running without any extra costs, even during peak periods.

Daily backup

An automatic daily backup is taken of the VPS, which always preserves the state of the system from the previous day, so you can restore the system following a fault or a failed update.

What is a Windows VPS used for?

A Windows VPS is the right choice if your software requires a Windows environment, or if your team wants to work on the familiar Windows interface on a server that is always available.

.NET and ASP.NET applications

With the IIS web server, you can run ASP.NET and .NET websites, web applications and APIs, including both older .NET Framework-based systems and modern .NET versions. The free SQL Server Express edition can be installed as a database; a separate SQL Server licence is required for the more advanced editions.

Business software in the cloud

You can also run accounting, invoicing or business management software on it, which your staff can access via remote desktop from anywhere. This means you don’t have to keep an office computer switched on all the time, and the server runs in a data centre, on a secure network, with a reliable power supply.

Windows or Linux VPS?

If your software runs on Linux as well – for example, a PHP-based website or a Docker container – a KVM VPS offers more resources at a lower price, as there are no licence fees. You should opt for a Windows VPS if your application specifically requires Windows Server, or if you wish to manage the server via a graphical interface.

Windows VPS Questions and Answers

Questions about Windows VPS

What is a Windows VPS?

A Windows VPS is a virtual private server running the Windows Server operating system. It is ideal for businesses and individuals who need to run Windows-specific applications and services: ASP.NET websites, MSSQL databases, business software or other programs built on the Windows ecosystem. You’ll be provided with your own dedicated resources, and you can work on it via Remote Desktop (RDP) just as you would on your own computer.

What is the difference between a Windows VPS and a Linux VPS?

The main difference lies in the operating system and, consequently, in the range of software that can be run and how it is managed. You manage a Windows VPS via a graphical interface on a remote desktop, and applications designed for Windows – such as the .NET Framework, IIS or MSSQL – run natively on it. This makes it the best choice if your website or software requires a Windows environment.

You typically manage a Linux VPS via the command line, using SSH. It requires fewer resources, has no licence fees, and is the primary platform for most web technologies (PHP, Python, Node.js, MySQL). Ultimately, the choice depends on what software you want to run and which environment you prefer to work in.

Why does a Windows VPS cost more than a Linux VPS?

The difference is primarily due to the Windows Server licence fee, which is included in the monthly charge for a Windows VPS. Linux is open-source, so there is no licence fee, making it cheaper for those who do not need Windows-specific applications. Windows Server also requires more memory and storage, which is why Windows VPS plans come with more resources from the outset.

If an application is designed for a Windows environment, the higher cost can be more than offset by compatibility and the familiar user interface.

How do I connect to the Windows VPS?

Via Remote Desktop Connection (RDP). You can access the server using the built-in Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc) program on Windows, or Microsoft’s free Windows App on macOS and mobile devices; you will need the server’s IP address, your username and password to log in. For security reasons, it is advisable to use a strong password and, if possible, to restrict RDP access to your own IP addresses.

Which version of Windows Server should I choose?

If you do not have any software that requires an older version, it is worth choosing the latest Windows Server 2025 or 2022, as these will receive security updates for the longest period. We offer the 2019 and 2016 versions primarily for use with older applications; extended support for Windows Server 2016 ends in January 2027.

How many users can work on the server at the same time?

Windows Server allows two simultaneous remote desktop administrator sessions by default; this is sufficient for managing the server and running most applications. If several users were to work on it at the same time – for example, using a shared accounting program – Remote Desktop Services (RDS) licences would be required; please contact us about this and we’ll be happy to help.
