Nowadays, it is essential for every website to have an SSL certificate to ensure data security. Only such websites can guarantee that visitors’ login or bank account details are protected from hacker attacks.
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which helps to establish a secure, encrypted connection between the server hosting the website and the user’s device.
In short, SSL enables the secure flow of information and communication on the internet and on internal networks. This is now essential for any serious website.
How much does it cost to use SSL? We’ve looked for the answers to this question in this article!
Free SSL certificate
The first thing we need to make clear right at the outset is that there are several different sources from which we can obtain an SSL certificate for our website. Among these, of course, there are free options, which can essentially be divided into two main categories.
One such example is an SSL certificate that comes with a trial period or is only valid for a limited time; in most cases, this security protocol is made available for 30 days – although 60- and 90-day options are also available – after which it becomes a paid service.
The other free alternative is the so-called Let’s Encrypt solution, which is a genuinely free option and a good solution in cases where a portfolio website or a non-profit portal only requires basic protection.
The certificates issued in this way are in fact completely free of charge, as they are backed by a non-profit initiative which provides free SSL certificates to anyone with the aim of making the internet safer, provided there is no commercial interest involved.
Of course, free SSL solutions do have their drawbacks; for example, they typically only offer very basic domain validation, whilst providing no support whatsoever behind the scenes.
Most web hosting providers offer this sort of solution to their users, but it is no coincidence that a more sophisticated website – particularly one involving banking transactions, login details and so on – requires a more robust infrastructure.
Paid SSL certificate
Paid SSL certificates provide truly high-quality protection for our website and our visitors. This is particularly important for an online shop!
The price of an SSL certificate depends to a large extent on the type you choose, the number of years you purchase in advance, and the certification authority from which you apply for the certificate.
Paid SSL certificates are provided by authorities such as Thawte, GeoTrust, RapidSSL and DigiCert. There are, of course, others, but these are the ones that are completely reliable, and you can purchase protection for your website from them with complete peace of mind at any time.
Not only can we set up new certificates with their help, but we can also easily renew expired certificates.
In terms of price, the total cost can range from around ten to a few hundred euros per year, but there are specialised SSL certificates that can cost a thousand euros or more.
