Web hosting security: How can we protect our website?

2 min read

Although web hosting providers are already doing everything they can to ensure their users’ websites are as secure as possible, we cannot be too careful, as hackers are constantly devising new methods.

How can we protect our web hosting and, by extension, our website from unauthorised access, and ensure that neither the content hosted on the hosting server nor our customers’ personal data can be accessed?

Below, we’ve put together some useful tips that might help you with this!

A good password is the foundation of everything

Many security experts emphasise that a truly good password is one that even its owner cannot remember. Obviously, this isn’t always practical in everyday life, but when it comes to web hosting, we can write down that random string of characters in our notebook – a strong password that ensures our site remains secure.

If we want our password to be easy to remember, it should be completely unique – not a real word, but rather a portmanteau combined with numbers, upper- and lower-case letters, and at least one special character. And under no circumstances should we ever disclose this password to a third party!

Install scripts with care

If you are installing scripts on your web hosting account, always ensure that the software you have chosen is sufficiently secure and, incidentally, up to date. A faulty script can pose a huge security risk – effectively creating a security vulnerability for you.

For this reason, it is recommended that you only use such scripts if you know exactly where they come from and what they do. Free software requires particular caution; it must be installed with even greater care, and updates must not be neglected.

Let’s ensure extra security for content management systems

When it comes to web hosting and websites, content management systems always pose a significant security risk; therefore, whether you choose WordPress, Joomla or any other solution, you must always pay particular attention to keeping them up to date and installing their security plugins.

It is recommended, for example, to install at least one security program and enable two-factor authentication, but it is also worth applying settings such as limiting the number of login attempts.

There are now highly complex security solutions available – although these are not necessarily free – which guarantee real-time protection and can prevent unauthorised intruders in a variety of ways.

Regular backups are important

Although backups do not directly contribute to the security of web hosting and websites, they play an even more important role indirectly. The reason is that, should any problems arise with the web hosting, the backups ensure that at least no data is lost.

It is important, however, that before taking a backup, you always run a virus scan via cPanel, so you don’t have to worry about malware and other issues.
