Hosting migration

Web hosting 3 min read

All our hosting plans include a free migration service: we will transfer your existing website, databases and emails from your previous provider, with minimal or even zero downtime. All we need for this is your old hosting login details.

Requesting a migration

  1. Order a new service, such as a web hosting plan, cPanel or WordPress hosting. Choose a plan with more storage than your current hosting plan.
  2. Open a support ticket in the client portal, under the ‘Support’ section, and include the following details:
    • the domain(s) to be transferred,
    • the login details for the old hosting control panel (e.g. cPanel), or, if none exists, the access details for FTP, the database and email accounts,
    • if relevant, the desired time (e.g. a migration outside working hours).
  3. Our team will transfer your files, databases and emails, set up your new hosting account, and let you know when everything is ready.

How long does it take?

We can usually start most migrations quickly, following your request. Manual migration may take up to a few days, depending on the size and complexity of the website, as well as how the old server allows data to be downloaded. If necessary, we will agree on the exact time via the ticket.

From cPanel to cPanel

If your previous provider also uses cPanel and you have ordered cPanel hosting from us, we will create a full backup of your account and restore it in a single step: your files, databases, email accounts and redirects will all be transferred. For this to work, your previous hosting provider must allow full cPanel backups to be created; if this is disabled, we will carry out the migration manually, which will take longer.

From another system

If your old hosting is not cPanel-based, or if a full backup cannot be created, we will transfer the files via FTP (or SSH, if available), create a backup of the databases and import them, and transfer the emails one mailbox at a time.

What you need to do

Before the migration: one day before the planned switchover, reduce the TTL value of the domain’s DNS records (for example, to 300 seconds), so that the change propagates more quickly. If you have an online shop or a site that is updated frequently, please avoid making any changes to the content on the old site once the backup has been completed, or schedule the migration for a quieter period.

Before changing your DNS settings, check the new site. In your computer’s hosts file (Windows: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, macOS and Linux: /etc/hosts), you can temporarily map the domain to the new hosting IP address:

203.0.113.10 pelda.hu www.pelda.hu

This means that only your computer will see the new storage space. Replace the IP address with your new storage space; delete the line after testing.

DNS configuration: change your domain’s name servers or A record to point to your new hosting provider. To find out which option is right for you, please read our article on choosing between an A record and a name server change. Due to DNS propagation, the change will take effect gradually, over a period of 24–72 hours.

After the change:

  • Please check that the free SSL certificate has been issued: this can only be issued once the domain is pointing to the new hosting account.
  • In your email clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, mobile), check the names of the incoming and outgoing servers and update them to the new hosting provider’s details if they differ.
  • Please do not cancel your old hosting account for a few more days: during the propagation period, some emails may still be delivered there, and the old site can be restored if necessary.
  • Try out the website’s forms, the login process and the checkout process too.

If anything isn’t working after the switch, please let us know in a ticket and we’ll help you.
