CloudLinux OS 8.9 has been released

1 min read

On 23 November 2023, the CloudLinux team announced that the latest version of CloudLinux OS, version 8.9, was now available. Following the release of AlmaLinux OS 8.9, the team tested the update and then gradually rolled it out to its customers.

Updates in version 8.9 include enhanced security management, an updated application pipeline, and expanded automation capabilities for systems and containers.

You can read more about this release in the AlmaLinux OS release notes.

The main changes are as follows

The kernel has been updated to version 4.18.0-513.5.1.lve.el8.x86_64 to comply with RHEL 8.9. The LVE kernel module has been updated to version 2.0-56.

Updated modules:

  • Node.js 20

Among the other new features of the underlying AlmaLinux 8.9, the most important are: GCC Toolset 13, LLVM Toolset 16.0.6, Rust Toolset 1.71.1, Go Toolset 1.20.10, OpenSCAP 1.3.8 and updated SCAP security profiles.

Here’s how to enable Node.js 20 on a CloudLinux 8 server:

dnf module reset nodejs
dnf module install nodejs:20

In a web hosting environment, CloudLinux’s own Node.js Selector can manage versions, meaning that different versions of Node.js can run on the same server for different users.

How to update to it

The CloudLinux team rolled out the updated cloudlinux-release package in stages, with the target date for full deployment being 11 December 2023. Anyone who did not wish to wait for this could update from version 8.8 as follows:

dnf --enablerepo=cloudlinux-rollout-5-bypass install cloudlinux-release
dnf update

Nowadays, the dnf update command alone updates to the latest point release of CloudLinux 8.

How long is it supported for?

CloudLinux OS 8 will receive updates until 31 May 2029 (see our article on the CloudLinux lifecycle for details). You can upgrade to version 9 locally using the ELevate tool: Upgrading CloudLinux from 8 to 9 with ELevate. Further releases in the 8 series:

Our cPanel hosting plans run on CloudLinux, and it can also be installed as an operating system on our KVM VPS servers.
