How do you create a WordPress website?

3 min read

Amongst CMS systems, WordPress stands head and shoulders above the rest. If you’re looking for an affordable, easy-to-use yet highly versatile solution, this content management system could be an excellent choice.

It’s no coincidence that over 40 per cent of all websites worldwide are powered by WordPress, which is why many people decide to try their hand at exploring the system for themselves. So, how do you go about creating a WordPress website? We’ve summarised the most important steps below!

The first step is choosing the right domain name

Without a domain name, you can’t have your own website – as I’m sure everyone knows. That’s why, when setting up a new WordPress site, it’s essential to start by choosing the right domain name, which you can, of course, arrange alongside your hosting if you find a provider that offers both.

Choosing the right domain name is always a matter of personal preference, but it is important to think carefully to ensure that it remains relevant in the future, is easy to remember and, as far as possible, meets SEO requirements.

Choosing the right web hosting

Good web hosting is fast, affordable and offers high uptime; it also comes with cPanel, which makes it easy to use even for beginners – for example, allowing them to quickly install the WordPress platform on their hosting account, which forms the basis for website creation.

The choice of web hosting is essentially determined by exactly what sort of website you want to create. For a small blog or portfolio site, solutions offering a few gigabytes are perfectly adequate, but if you’re running an online shop or hosting a lot of content, the sky’s the limit.

Let’s install WordPress

Once you have your domain name and hosting, you can get straight to work installing WordPress. This works in the same way on most cPanel-based hosting providers, so you can either upload the necessary files directly to the server or install it via a graphical interface, which is a better and safer option in many respects.

We must take great care to ensure that WordPress is installed with the correct settings, as reinstalling it later can cause a great deal of hassle. Once the system has been installed – which takes no more than a few minutes – we can get straight to work on building our own website.

A good template and the right plugins are the foundation of it all

We could write pages and pages about how to build a WordPress site, so we’ll essentially just offer two key tips for those who are still relatively new to the subject or at an intermediate level.

One thing to bear in mind is that the better the template you choose, the easier it will be to create a website with an appropriate design that is clear and user-friendly. Although there are some very good free options available, for more complex projects you will definitely need to consider paid alternatives.

Furthermore, don’t skimp on plugins. No WordPress site can function without plugins, whether they’re for security, design elements or useful features. Take a thorough look at the options available, and bear in mind that paid solutions may be required for the more important features.
