How can you check whether a .hu domain name is available?

3 min read

We’d like to launch a new website, but we don’t know whether the domain name we’ve chosen is already taken or not. This is a very important issue, as securing the right domain is essential before we can start working on the overall concept, let alone the structure and design of the website.

Nowadays, however, it is particularly difficult to find a ‘.hu’ domain name that is not already taken. Own brands are, of course, an exception, but behind more general names there is usually an established website and a complete concept.

Would you like to check whether the .hu domain name you’ve got in mind is already taken before purchasing web hosting? We’ll show you the simplest way to do it!

Checking the availability of a .hu domain name

Although there are several places where you can check the status of a domain name, if you wish to filter for names with the .hu extension and want reliable results, we recommend using the official .hu domain registry’s website to check availability.

The domain search tool available on the domain.hu website is very straightforward and uses a reliable database; so if it shows that a particular name has been registered, then that is indeed the case.

To check availability, simply enter the domain name – without the extension or any prefixes – into the search bar, then click the ‘Search’ button, and the system will display any results in a matter of seconds.

If the chosen .hu domain name is available, a green tick will appear to indicate that you can go ahead and register it.

However, if the domain name is already taken, you will see a white exclamation mark inside a red circle with a message stating that the domain name is not available, but you can click on it to access its public details.

Due to data protection guidelines, unfortunately we won’t really be able to see any useful data here regarding private individuals beyond when the registration was created or amended, and its expiry date; however, the system does immediately display the contact details of the relevant registrar.

How can we find out who owns a ‘.hu’ domain?

If a .hu domain is registered but has no website associated with it – and it appears to have been purchased simply with a view to doing something with it at some point in the future – then we have the opportunity to purchase it from the prospective owner.

The biggest problem in this regard is how we can track down the owner.

If the client is a business rather than a private individual, the availability checker shown above will provide us with the company name during the search, which is sufficient for us to locate the relevant contact.

However, in the case of private individuals, we do have the option of sending them an email with our request. Email addresses are never made public; however, at the bottom of the list provided by the availability checker, you will find an option to ‘Send an email to the administrative contact’.

This allows us to contact the domain name owner directly, but unfortunately, in such cases, a response is not guaranteed, nor is there any guarantee that, if they do respond, they will ask a fair price for the domain name, as the more valuable ones can cost as much as several hundred euros.
