Red Hat, Inc., the company behind Red Hat Linux, celebrated the 30th anniversary of its founding on 27 March.

Red Hat, Inc. is an American multinational software company that focuses primarily on the development and support of open-source software. The company was founded in 1993 by Bob Young and Marc Ewing, who created the Red Hat Linux distribution. The company’s name refers to the red cap that Ewing wore whilst studying at Carnegie Mellon University. Red Hat’s aim was to make it easier to use Linux and other open-source software in an enterprise environment.

The company soon became one of the leading players in the Linux distribution market and was successfully listed on the stock exchange in 1999. By this time, Red Hat was not only offering its own Linux distribution, but also providing extensive support and consultancy to companies switching to open-source technologies.

In the 2000s, Red Hat further strengthened its market position and expanded its product portfolio. With the launch of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) in 2003, the company increasingly turned its attention to enterprise customers, as RHEL became one of the most reliable and well-supported Linux distributions on the market. Alongside RHEL, Red Hat also offered a range of other open-source software development and infrastructure solutions, such as JBoss Middleware, Red Hat Virtualisation and Red Hat OpenShift.

In the 2010s, Red Hat made further strategic acquisitions to expand its services and strengthen its market position. In 2012, the company acquired FuseSource, which further strengthened its market share in the middleware sector. In 2014, Red Hat acquired FeedHenry, a mobile application development platform, which enabled it to expand its offering in the mobile services sector.

In 2018, Red Hat reached a significant milestone when IBM announced that it would acquire the company for $34 billion. The acquisition was finalised in 2019, and Red Hat continues to operate as a separate business unit within IBM. The merger has enabled Red Hat to capitalise on IBM’s global reach and resources, whilst continuing to focus on open-source innovation and community-driven development.

Through its collaboration with IBM, Red Hat has continued to promote open-source technologies and develop industry-leading solutions. The company has further expanded its presence in a number of areas, including cloud-based services, data centre solutions, artificial intelligence and machine learning. IBM and Red Hat have worked together to consolidate and integrate the solutions and services offered to enterprise clients, enabling organisations to utilise open-source technologies more easily and effectively.

Red Hat remains committed to the open-source community and the development of Linux. The company plays an active role in the development of the Linux kernel and participates in numerous open-source projects, such as the Fedora Project, a community-driven Linux distribution, and OpenStack, an open-source cloud infrastructure management system.

In summary, Red Hat’s history is a successful example of how a small open-source software company can be developed into a market-leading multinational corporation. The company continues to place great emphasis on open-source innovation and community collaboration, whilst providing valuable and reliable solutions for its corporate clients. The merger with IBM has further strengthened Red Hat’s market position and enabled it to continue to play a key role in the dissemination and development of open-source technologies.
