To create a website, you essentially need two key elements: a domain name and web hosting. Choosing these is always a multi-step process, and every single step is crucial to ensuring that your future website is a success.
When it comes to web hosting, one such issue is storage capacity. It really does matter how much space we have available to build our website. Many people, for example, make the mistake of only considering how much space their future website will need at that particular moment.
After all, updates and extra content can take up a great deal of space over time, not to mention any potential expansion or experimental projects.
Fortunately, most web hosting providers are very flexible in this regard, so they always offer the option to upgrade; however, it is worth planning from the outset so that you do not need to do this straight away at launch, or even before then.
We have therefore listed the most common types of websites below and, drawing on our experience, examined how much web hosting account might be required for each.
Blog, portfolio website
A blog and a portfolio website are essentially entry-level websites. They do not contain a great deal of data or a huge number of pages, and there is no need to install a lot of additional plugins to create them; what’s more, blogs often do not even feature images.
In such cases, you rarely need more than 1GB of storage, even if you deduct, for example, the installation size of WordPress or another content management system.
A website like this uses a simple structure; as well as providing the most basic information, 1GB is enough to host a small gallery whilst also allowing us to create a suitable web design.
Small business website
If you run a small business and would like to present yourself, your activities and your work in greater detail, and, in addition to regular news updates, publish specialist articles, perhaps set up several galleries or upload your own videos, then 2–3 GB will be essential.
This size no longer prevents us from ensuring that, alongside the right web design, our site includes plenty of extra features that can further enhance our company’s reputation and improve customer satisfaction.
Corporate website with a small online shop
If you’re looking to launch a more substantial corporate website that also includes a small online shop, then 5GB hosting plans represent the entry-level option. It’s very important to plan ahead and take the online shop’s future growth into account.
A size of 5–8 GB is typically sufficient in such cases, but for those seeking dynamic growth – that is, who, alongside a company website with constantly updated content, are planning to sell a large number of new products via an online shop – it is worth aiming for the upper limit of this range.
Online shop
Many people think that online shops do not require a lot of storage space, yet these ventures actually require the largest hosting plans. The reason for this is not only the large number of products and the vast quantity of product photos, which, incidentally, also take up a great deal of space
Ideally, an online shop is constantly expanding; the number of products is growing, as are its features, whilst visitor numbers and user interfaces may require dozens of extra megabytes on a daily basis.
For this reason, 10–15 GB is the minimum for a low-traffic online shop, but for a high-traffic online shop, even 20–25 GB of storage is not considered much to start with; in fact, if the business is successful, this will probably need to be expanded quickly.
