What is VPS hosting and how does it work?

Are you looking for a reliable hosting solution for your website that meets all your needs? If so, you’ve no doubt come across the terms ‘VPS hosting’ or ‘VPS server’, which may not seem entirely clear at first glance, but in this article we’ve compiled everything you need to know about them.

What is VPS hosting?

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server, which refers to a specialised private server that we do not physically own. In practice, it is effectively a virtual server, which is advantageous for many people because, although a great many businesses need one, only a few can afford to purchase a physical server.

Furthermore, most people are unable to make the most of their own server, not to mention the difficulties involved in storing, operating and maintaining it; that is why VPS hosting ensures that every business can, at an affordable price, effectively ‘rent’ a server for itself, at least in virtual form.

When might we need a VPS?

In practice, there are many situations where we may need a virtual private server. As the owner of a website or online shop, for example, you may wish to introduce features or run specialised software that traditional hosting cannot support.

In such cases, VPS hosting may be the best and most cost-effective alternative, but you may also need to rent a virtual private server if, for example, you have a high-traffic website that traditional hosting can no longer support, meaning you require greater server capacity.

Of course, a VPS is by no means limited to running websites! It can easily replace an office server, for example, whilst not only reducing expenditure but also eliminating the need to factor in maintenance, operational and repair costs.

It is also worth noting that with VPS hosting, the likelihood of downtime is much lower; if a problem arises, another server takes over in the background within seconds, whereas with a local server, you have to wait for the maintenance team to arrive and rectify the fault, which can often take several hours.

How a VPS works

VPS hosting works practically exactly the same way as traditional servers, with the only difference being that the machine itself is not located in our home or office; this means we do not need to make space for it, nor do we need to see or hear it whilst it is running, as the entire system can be operated via the network.

Although we cannot see the server itself, our website can be hosted and run on the VPS in exactly the same way; the business’s email system, database, newsletter or CRM system can be operated from it; and it can even be used for backups and any other processes that require server-based infrastructure.

VPS servers can also be scaled up freely, but much more easily and quickly than their traditional counterparts; in other words, you can request additional hosting or memory at any time, without the need for installation or waiting for days – you can often enjoy the results of your request within a few hours.

Just like traditional servers, a VPS offers full access, so the owner can take care of starting, shutting down or restarting it, and even handle all administration and installation, meaning we can decide for ourselves which operating system to install on it and so on.

VPS is therefore superior to traditional servers in every respect; it is no coincidence that they are becoming increasingly popular amongst users.
