Discontinuation of Greek .eu domains

1 min read

All domain names containing Greek characters registered under the Latin .eu extension were gradually deactivated, i.e. deleted, on 13 November 2022, following the expiry of the three-year deactivation period.

From 14 November 2022 onwards, only Greek domain names with the .ευ extension (Greek.Greek) will remain registered. From 14 November 2022, domain holders will only be able to use the Greek.Greek domain name.

The .ευ guidelines provide a detailed account of the cloning of Greek .eu domain names to .ευ, which took place on 14 November 2019. As part of this process, a three-year orthographic alignment phase was launched, allowing both Greek .eu domain names and their clones under .ευ to co-exist for three years, until 13 November 2022.

The gradual phase-out of Greek domain names with the Latin .eu extension was carried out in order to follow the best practice of ‘non-mixed script’ for internationalised domain names. The aim of the ‘non-mixed script’ best practice is to avoid confusion between domain names that appear similar.
