The two basic costs involved in setting up your own website are web hosting and the domain name. The domain is the smaller expense, but it is not a one-off cost: you do not buy the name, but rather acquire the right to use it for a set period, which must be performed before it expires. In this article, we’ve summarised how much the most popular extensions cost and what factors influence the final price.
How much does registration, renewal and transfer cost?
The cost of a domain name depends primarily on the extension: each extension has its own registry and its own prices. The annual fees for the most popular extensions at aWh are:
| Extension | Registration | Renewal | Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| .hu | €5.44 | €5.44 | €5.44 |
| .eu | €6.60 | €6.60 | €6.60 |
| .com | €13.20 | €13.20 | €13.20 |
| .net | €15.60 | €15.60 | €13.80 |
| .org | €11.30 | €15.00 | €14.40 |
| .de | €5.40 | €4.20 | €3.80 |
| .at | €13.40 | €13.40 | Free |
| .sk | €15.60 | €15.60 | €14.40 |
| .io | €44.10 | €58.10 | €53.40 |
| .shop | €4.30 | €35.80 | €33.60 |
Prices are quoted per year and do not include VAT. The prices for all of the more than 100 domain extensions can be found on our domain page, whilst the registration rules are listed on the individual pages for each extension.
What affects the price of a domain?
- Domain extensions. The prices of country-code top-level domains (.hu, .de, .sk) and generic top-level domains (.com, .net, .org) also vary, whilst certain special extensions are considerably more expensive.
- The difference between registration and renewal. For some domain extensions, renewal costs significantly more than the first year; you can see this in the ‘Renewal’ column of the table. That’s why, as well as the registration fee, you should always check the renewal fee too, as that’s what matters in the long run.
- The duration. You can register a domain for longer than one year (for .hu domains, between 1 and 10 years), so you don’t have to worry about the renewal every year.
- The number of domains. Each domain is subject to a separate fee, even if you register different extensions for the same brand (for example,
cegnev.huandcegnev.com). - Premium domain names. Certain short or highly sought-after domain names are offered by the registry at a higher, individual price. We do not sell such premium domain names; with us, every domain can be registered at the standard fee for that extension. Our knowledge base article provides further information on premium domain names.
How much does a domain that’s already been registered cost?
If the domain name you’ve chosen has already been registered by someone else, you can only acquire it from them, and they set the price. In this case, the domain holder changes; our article on domain transfers explains how this works. If you simply wish to transfer the domain from another provider to us, this is known as the transfer: free transfer does not include a renewal, whilst the fee for paid transfer usually includes a one-year renewal; this may vary for certain extensions. The steps are outlined in our transfer guide.
What should you look out for to avoid paying more?
- Be sure to compare renewal fees as well, not just the first year’s price: from the second year onwards, you’ll be paying the renewal fee.
- Enable automatic renewal or keep an eye on expiry notifications. Restoring an expired domain takes more time and effort, and in the meantime your website and email may go offline; our article on expired domains explains this in more detail.
- Only register the domain extensions you actually need: to protect your brand, .com or .eu is usually sufficient alongside .hu.
