The .de extension is Germany’s country code top-level domain. It was delegated in 1986, and is administered by the DENIC cooperative in Frankfurt. With over 16 million registered names, it is the largest in Europe and one of the largest country code top-level domains in the world.

Germany is Hungary’s most important trading partner, and German users have a high level of trust in websites with the .de extension. If you want to reach German customers, launch an online shop on the German market, or give your German partners a local presence, a .de domain is the best choice. Before registering, it is worth checking the restrictions below, as DENIC’s rules differ from the usual in a few respects.

Prices are quoted for one year and do not include VAT. The free transfer does not include a renewal; the fee for the paid transfer usually includes a one-year renewal.

How long will it take to be ready?

New domain registration

The registration of .de domains is fully automated, so the registration process is virtually instantaneous; you can start using your new domain name within a few minutes.

Domain transfer

To transfer your domain name to us, you’ll need to disable transfer protection and obtain an authorisation code from your current registrar. The transfer process may take several days.

Once the transfer is complete, a new subscription period begins; the domain name will expire one year from the date of the transfer, rather than the original expiry date being extended by one year.

How many characters can it be?

The domain name extension in .de must be at least 3 and no more than 63 characters long. A shorter, easy-to-remember name is generally preferable.

Restrictions

There are no specific requirements or restrictions regarding the registration of domain names; anyone can register one. .de domain names are allocated on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis.

Domain names with the .de extension can only be registered for one year and must be renewed annually; there is no possibility of multiple-year renewals.

If the owner of a .DE domain or the administrative contact does not have a residential address in Germany (PO boxes are not accepted), they must appoint an authorised representative based in Germany who can receive official or court documents on their behalf. This information must be provided within two weeks upon request by DENIC.

Whois privacy

The Whois privacy service is available to both individuals and companies, and hides the owner’s details in the Whois database.
