The .fi extension is Finland’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD) and one of the oldest such extensions on the internet: it was delegated as early as 1986, just a few years after the introduction of the first domain extensions. The registration of .fi domain names is currently managed by Traficom (Liikenne- ja viestintävirasto, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency).

The popularity of .fi domain names has grown steadily over the years, and there are now nearly half a million registered .fi domain names. The domain extension is primarily popular amongst businesses, organisations and private individuals operating in Finland, but as it has been available to citizens and organisations in the member states of the European Economic Area (EEA) since 2016, it is also becoming an increasingly popular choice internationally.

Prices are quoted for one year and do not include VAT. The free transfer does not include a renewal; the fee for the paid transfer usually includes a one-year renewal.

How long will it take to be ready?

New domain registration

The registration of .fi domains is an automated process, so registration is virtually instantaneous: you can usually start using your new domain name within a few minutes of placing your order.

Domain transfer

To transfer your existing .fi domain name to us, you will need to disable the transfer lock with your current registrar and obtain the authorisation (Auth) code for the domain. The transfer process usually takes a few days.

How many characters can it be?

The domain name with the .fi extension must be at least 2 and no more than 63 characters long. However, a shorter, easy-to-remember name is generally the better choice.

Restrictions

Since the regulatory reform of 2016, the .fi domain name has been available for registration not only to individuals and organisations based in Finland, but also to those based in any member state of the European Economic Area (EEA):

• In the case of private individuals, a Finnish personal identification number (henkilötunnus) or an accepted form of identification issued by another EEA Member State is required.
• In the case of organisations, a Finnish business registration number (y-tunnus) or registration in a member state of the EEA is required.

.fi domain names must be renewed annually; it is not usually possible to opt for a longer subscription period spanning several years.

Whois privacy

In the case of private individuals, personal data (address, telephone number) are not, by default, displayed publicly in the WHOIS database, whilst the registration details of organisations (companies) are publicly available.
