.eu is the domain extension for the European Union. It was launched at the end of 2005, and has been open for registration by the general public since spring 2006. It is administered by the non-profit organisation EURid, which now manages several million .eu domain names.
The .eu domain can be registered by individuals living in the EU and the European Economic Area, organisations registered there, and EU citizens living anywhere in the world. It is ideal for those who wish to market themselves not just to a single country, but to the entire European market.
Why should you choose a .eu domain name?
- European presence: you can reach customers in all EU Member States using a single domain name; there is no need to maintain separate domain extensions for each country.
- Trust: the .eu extension indicates that the website is operated by a business based in the EU and subject to EU consumer protection and data protection rules.
- More available domain names: compared to .com and .hu, you’re more likely to find a short, easy-to-remember domain name that’s still available.
- A good complement to .hu: an obvious second domain for exporting companies and international projects.
.eu domain prices
| Extension | Registration | Transfer | Renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| .eu | €6.60 | €6.60 | €6.60 |
Prices are quoted for one year and do not include VAT. The free transfer does not include a renewal; the fee for the paid transfer usually includes a one-year renewal.
How long will it take to be ready?
New domain registration
The registration of .eu domains is fully automated, so the registration process is virtually instantaneous; you can start using your new domain name within a few minutes.
Domain transfer
To transfer your domain name to us, you must disable the transfer lock and obtain the authorisation code from your current registrar. Transferring a domain name that is in quarantine (i.e. one that has already expired) incurs additional costs.
How many characters can it be?
The domain name extension in .eu must be at least 2 and no more than 63 characters long. Short, clear domain names are often considered more effective, as they are easier for website visitors to remember.
Special characters
The .eu domain extension supports the following special characters:
à á â ã ä å æ ç è é ê ë ì í î ï ð ñ ò ó ô õ ö ø ù ú û ü ý þ ÿ
ā ă ą ć ĉ ċ č ď đ ē ĕ ė ę ě ĝ ğ ġ ģ ĥ ħ ĩ ī ĭ į ı ĵ ķ ĺ ļ ľ ŀ ł ń ņ ň ʼn ŋ ō ŏ ő œ ŕ ŗ ř ś ŝ š ť ŧ ũ ū ŭ ů ű ų ŵ ŷ ź ż ž

Restrictions
.EU domain names may only be registered by citizens of a Member State of the European Union or by persons with a registered address within the European Economic Area. The registry (EURid) may request proof of citizenship from applicants residing outside the European Economic Area.
Whois privacy
The Whois privacy service is not available for .eu domain names; however, the details of private domain owners are concealed in accordance with the GDPR.
