The .ie domain extension is Ireland’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD), administered by the IE Domain Registry (IEDR). The first .ie domain names were registered as early as 1988, making it one of the oldest ccTLD extensions.
The popularity of .ie domain names has grown steadily over the years; there are now more than 300,000 registered .ie domain names, which are particularly popular amongst businesses and individuals with links to Ireland.

How long will it take to be ready?
New domain registration
Due to the IEDR’s verification process, the registration of .ie domains is not always immediate: the IEDR may verify the domain name and the supporting documents submitted manually, so registration may take anywhere from a few hours to a few working days.
Domain transfer
To transfer your existing .ie domain name to us, you will need to disable the transfer lock with your current registrar and obtain the authorisation (Auth) code for the domain. The transfer process usually takes a few days.
How many characters can it be?
The domain name extension in .ie must be at least 2 and no more than 63 characters long.
Special characters
The .ie domain extension supports the following special characters, corresponding to the long vowels (fada) of the Irish language:
á é í ó ú
Restrictions
To register a .ie domain, you must be able to demonstrate a verifiable connection to Ireland – this may be a residential or business address in Ireland, an Irish company registration number or VAT number, or a trade mark registered in Ireland that matches the domain name. Documents proving this connection must be submitted during the registration process.
Whois privacy
Individuals may request that their personal data be hidden from the public WHOIS database; organisations’ registration details are typically publicly available.
