.org is one of the oldest domain extensions on the internet: it was created in 1985, alongside .com and .net. Its name derives from the word ‘organisation’ and was originally intended for organisations that did not fit into any of the other categories. Since 2003, it has been administered by the non-profit Public Interest Registry, which manages more than 10 million .org domain names.
The .org domain can be registered by anyone, but it is traditionally used by non-profit and civil society organisations, foundations, associations, educational and cultural institutions, open-source projects and communities.
Why should you choose a .org domain name?
- Credibility: visitors associate the .org extension with community-based, charitable activities, which is particularly important when it comes to fundraising and recruiting volunteers.
- International recognition: an extension that is known and commonly used all over the world; it is not tied to any particular country or language.
- More available domain names: compared to .com, you’re more likely to find a short domain name that matches your organisation’s name.
- There are no restrictions: you do not need to prove your non-profit status to register, so social media sites, blogs and knowledge-sharing projects are also free to use it.
