How do I set up my email account in Gmail as a secondary account?

If you wish to manage your own domain’s email address (for example, info@sajatdomain.hu) via the familiar Gmail interface, you need to configure two things: to ensure that emails are delivered to Gmail, and to enable you to send emails from Gmail on behalf of your own address.

Important change: From January 2026, Gmail will gradually phase out the ‘View and download emails from other accounts’ feature (the continuous downloading of emails via POP3) and the Gmailify service. This feature can no longer be set up on new accounts, and Google is phasing out existing connections in stages. Instead, Google recommends setting up automatic email forwarding, which we will explain here.

1. Receiving emails: forwarding to Gmail

Set up automatic forwarding so that emails sent to your domain address are also forwarded to your Gmail address:

  1. Log in to cPanel and open the ‘Forwarders’ menu item in the ‘Email’ section.
  2. Click on the ‘Add Forwarder’ button, enter the domain address, and enter your Gmail address as the destination.
  3. Save the settings.

Our article on forwarding explains the details and potential pitfalls. If the address is linked to a mailbox, your emails will remain there too, so you can still access them via webmail.

2. Sending emails on behalf of a domain name

This feature is still working:

  1. In Gmail, click on the cog icon in the top right-hand corner, then select ‘View all settings’.
  2. Go to the ‘Accounts and Import’ tab, and under ‘Send emails as’, click on the ‘Add another email address’ link.
  3. Enter your name and the email address associated with your domain. Leave the ‘Treat as alias’ tick box ticked, then click the ‘Next step’ button.
  4. Enter the outgoing (SMTP) server details: the server address (which you can find in cPanel on the Email Accounts > Connect Devices page), port 465, your full domain email address as the username and your account password, and select the option for a secure connection using SSL.
  5. Gmail sends a verification code to the domain email address; due to forwarding, this will also arrive in your Gmail inbox. Enter the code.

When composing a new email, you can then select the domain’s address in the ‘From’ field. On the ‘Accounts and Import’ tab, you can set the system to always send replies from the address to which the email was received.

Alternative: IMAP account on your mobile phone

In the Gmail mobile app, your domain address can still be added as an IMAP account; the steps are outlined in the article on setting up your email account on iPhone and Android. In this case, your emails will remain in your own inbox, and you do not need to set up forwarding.

What should you look out for?

  • Spam: due to forwarded spam, Gmail may flag our own server as suspicious. Before forwarding, please enable the hosting service’s spam filter to ensure that unsolicited emails are not forwarded.
  • One-off import: if you’d like to see old emails from your domain’s mailbox in Gmail, Google still offers a one-off import option on the ‘Accounts and Import’ tab.
