AlmaLinux 9.2 is now available

4 min read

On 10 May 2023, the AlmaLinux OS Foundation announced the release of the new AlmaLinux OS 9.2, codenamed “Turquoise Kodkod”! This new version is based on the source code used for RHEL 9.2 and offers a long-term supported base system, as well as access to a wide range of applications and services. It is developed and maintained by a diverse community of developers, who ensure that users enjoy an outstanding open-source experience without having to pay licence fees. With this release, users can continue to enjoy a range of features, including support for container technologies, enhanced security through SELinux and firewalld integration, and ready-to-use disk images for cloud and virtual private server (VPS) deployments. These features, combined with regular updates, make AlmaLinux OS 9.2 a good choice for anyone seeking high performance and reliable stability in their operating system.

The installer is now available for four different architectures, which can be downloaded via the links below:

Release notes and further information

AlmaLinux 9.2 provides enhancements and features for hybrid cloud infrastructure, helping to deploy workloads, applications and services across multiple environments more quickly and with less effort. This release includes security updates such as the realmd system role, an SCAP profile, and Ansible content required for enhanced system checks to simplify security and compliance management. Improvements to application stacks include updates to compilers, runtime languages, databases and web servers. Enhancements to the web console and new system roles facilitate the automation and standardisation of systems. As for containers, new capabilities enable easier development and management of containerised deployments.

Version 9.2 uses the 5.14.0-284.11.1.el9_2 kernel. You can read more about this release in the release notes; the full list of changes can be found in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.2 release notes.

Software versions in AlmaLinux 9.2

Area Versions
Updated module streams Python 3.11, nginx 1.22, PostgreSQL 15
Version control Git 2.39.1, Git LFS 3.2.0
Basic toolchain GCC 11.3.1, glibc 2.34, binutils 2.35.2
Compilers and toolkits GCC Toolset 12, LLVM Toolset 15.0.7, Rust Toolset 1.66, Go Toolset 1.19.6
Troubleshooting and performance monitoring GDB 10.2, Valgrind 3.19, SystemTap 4.8, Dyninst 12.1.0, elfutils 0.188, PCP 6.0.1, Grafana 9.0.9

PostgreSQL 15, for example, can be installed from the module system as follows:

dnf module reset postgresql
dnf module install postgresql:15

Security updates

  • OpenSSL 3.0.7 and SELinux 3.5 user packages
  • Keylime 6.5.2 for remote machine authentication
  • OpenSCAP 1.3.7 and SCAP Security Guide 0.1.66, featuring a new rule for automatically terminating idle sessions
  • Clevis: accepting external tokens to unlock encrypted volumes
  • Rsyslog: TLS-encrypted logging now supports multiple CA files, and the service’s permissions have been restricted
  • fapolicyd: the application authorisation framework can also filter based on the RPM database
  • AlmaLinux EV Code Sign Secure Boot certificate has been updated

A minor but useful change for debugging is that the identifiers for debuginfo repositories have been renamed from *-debug to *-debuginfo, meaning that the dnf debuginfo-install extension now works correctly.

For Docker users

From version 9.2 onwards, the ‘latest’ and minimal tags for the official Docker image always point to the latest version of AlmaLinux 9. If an application still requires AlmaLinux 8, it is advisable to specify the container image with a specific version tag (for example, almalinux:8).

ISO verification and updating

wget https://repo.almalinux.org/almalinux/RPM-GPG-KEY-AlmaLinux-9
gpg --import RPM-GPG-KEY-AlmaLinux-9
wget https://vault.almalinux.org/9.2/isos/x86_64/CHECKSUM
gpg --verify CHECKSUM
sha256sum AlmaLinux-9.2-x86_64-boot.iso

In the output of gpg --verify, you should see the line “Good signature from ‘AlmaLinux OS 9’”, and the ISO’s SHA256 value must match the one in the CHECKSUM file. On an existing AlmaLinux 9 system, the update can be performed with a single command: dnf upgrade -y. If you’re upgrading from AlmaLinux 8, our ELevate guide will help you make the switch.

How long will AlmaLinux 9 be supported?

Active support for AlmaLinux 9 runs until 31 May 2027, with security updates available until 31 May 2032; version 9.2 reached the end of its lifecycle with the release of 9.3. Further releases in the 9 series:

AlmaLinux is an optional operating system on both our KVM VPS servers and our dedicated servers. Our cPanel hosting servers, meanwhile, run CloudLinux OS, which is closely related to AlmaLinux and is also RHEL-compatible.
