.dev is a generic top-level extension operated by Google Registry, which has been available for registration since 2019. It is designed for developers, software companies and technology projects.
A good choice for a developer’s portfolio, an open-source project page, documentation, an API, a technology blog or an agency’s landing page. The extension immediately makes it clear that the site is related to software development.
What makes .dev special is that the full extension appears on browsers’ HSTS preload lists, meaning that pages can only be accessed via an encrypted HTTPS connection. This provides your visitors with security as standard.
.dev domain prices

Prices are quoted for one year and do not include VAT. The free transfer does not include a renewal; the fee for the paid transfer usually includes a one-year renewal. How long will it take to be ready?
New domain registration
Registering .dev domains is an automated process, so registration is virtually instantaneous; you can start using your new domain name within a few minutes of placing your order.
Domain transfer
To transfer your existing .dev domain name to us, you’ll need to disable transfer protection with your current registrar and obtain the authorisation (Auth) code for the domain. The transfer process may take up to 5 days.
How many characters can it be?
The domain name extension in .dev must be at least 1 character long and no more than 63 characters long.
Special characters
With the .dev domain extension, special (accented) characters cannot be used in the domain name.
Restrictions
Anyone can register a .dev domain name; names are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. However, an SSL certificate is required for the website to function: browsers will only load .dev pages via an HTTPS connection; without a certificate, the site cannot be accessed. Regardless of this, the domain name can still be reserved without a certificate.
Whois privacy
The Whois privacy service is available to both individuals and companies, and hides some of the owner’s details in the public Whois database.
