.app is a generic top-level extension operated by Google Registry, which has been available for registration since 2018. It is designed for mobile and web applications, software and online services.

It’s a good choice for an app’s demo and download page, a SaaS service, a development company’s website or the web application itself. The extension immediately makes it clear that there is an app behind the site.

Like the .dev extension, .app appears on browsers’ HSTS preload lists, so websites can only be accessed via an encrypted HTTPS connection. This provides your users with security by default.

Prices are quoted for one year and do not include VAT. The free transfer does not include a renewal; the fee for the paid transfer usually includes a one-year renewal. How long will it take to be ready?

New domain registration

The registration of .app domains is an automated process, so registration is virtually instantaneous; you can start using your new domain name within a few minutes of placing your order.

Domain transfer

To transfer your existing .app domain name to us, you will need to disable transfer protection with your current registrar and obtain the authorisation (Auth) code for the domain. The transfer process may take up to 5 days.

How many characters can it be?

The domain name extension .app must be at least 1 character long and no more than 63 characters long.

Special characters

With the .app domain extension, special (accented) characters cannot be used in the domain name.

Restrictions

Anyone can register a .app domain name; names are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. However, an SSL certificate is required for the website to function: browsers will only load .app pages via an HTTPS connection, and the site cannot be accessed without a certificate. Nevertheless, the domain name can still be reserved without a certificate.

Whois privacy

The Whois privacy service is available to both individuals and companies, and hides some of the owner’s details in the public Whois database.
