.au is the country code top-level extension (ccTLD) for Australia and is administered by auDA (.au Domain Administration). For a long time, domain names could only be registered under subdomains – such as .com.au or .net.au – but since 2022, you have also been able to register directly under .au.
The direct .au domain name is shorter and easier to remember, and it makes website and email addresses simpler too. Australian users regard the .au extension as trustworthy, as it can only be obtained by those with a verified Australian connection.
.au domain prices
| Extension | Registration | Transfer | Renewal |

Prices are quoted for one year and do not include VAT. The free transfer does not include a renewal; the fee for the paid transfer usually includes a one-year renewal.
How long will it take to be ready?
New domain registration
Registrations for .au domains are processed by the registry manually, so registration typically takes 2–3 days following the order.
Domain transfer
To transfer your existing .au domain name to us, you will need to disable transfer protection with your current registrar and obtain the authorisation (Auth) code for the domain. The transfer process usually takes a few days.
How many characters can it be?
The domain name extension in .au must be at least 2 characters long and no more than 63 characters long.
Special characters
With the .au domain extension, special (accented) characters cannot be used in the domain name.
Restrictions
A .au domain name may only be registered by a party with a connection to Australia. The registrant must be an Australian citizen or a person holding a permanent residence permit, a company, business or association registered in Australia, or the holder of a valid trademark in Australia. Provided there is a connection to Australia, the domain name may be chosen freely. If the registration is based on a trade mark, the name must exactly match the trade mark or the company name, or an abbreviation thereof, or it must be related to the company’s activities, products or services.
Whois privacy
The WHOIS privacy service is not available for this extension. The registry’s rules determine which of the owner’s details are displayed in the public WHOIS database.
